How to convert a video to another format
Drop the file in, choose the target format and start the conversion. The picture is re-encoded, so the result plays on devices that cannot handle the original format. For video from an iPhone (MOV) or a game recording (MKV), MP4 is the safe bet.
The conversion runs through ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, which means it happens in your browser. The file is never uploaded, and for family videos or work recordings that matters more than speed.

Frequently asked questions
Does the quality suffer?
When only the container changes and the codec fits it (say MP4 with H.264 to MKV or MOV), the video is just repackaged and the quality stays exactly the same. Otherwise it is re-encoded, so a little. The highest quality setting keeps the difference below what you can see, at the cost of a larger file.
How long does a conversion take?
MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM are converted by the browser itself, usually with help from the graphics card. Repackaging takes a few seconds, re-encoding half a minute of Full HD video around ten. Older formats (AVI, WMV, MPG, 3GP, FLV, TS, OGV) go through ffmpeg in WebAssembly on a single thread, where a minute of video takes roughly a minute. Scaling down to 720p speeds up both.
Is the sound kept?
Yes, the audio track is converted along with the picture. If you want the video without sound, use the tool that removes audio.
Which codec does WebM get?
VP9 if your browser can encode it, otherwise the older VP8. VP9 gives a smaller file at the same quality, and every current browser plays both.
Which format for an old TV or DVD player?
Try AVI or MPG. AVI carries H.264 with MP3 audio, MPG is MPEG-2, which even players from before 2010 understand.
How large a file can I upload?
Up to 200 MB. For longer recordings it is better to shrink the video first with the compression tool.
